Deep in Colombia's Chocó region, Wounaan artisans craft extraordinary works from werregue — a natural fibre that comes form the leaves of a local palm. Weavers use a coiled technique where a fiber bundle is spiraled and stitched so densely that finished vessels can hold water. The dye-friendly fibre is known for its combination of strength, flexibility, and lustrous sheen. This weaving tradition is both a cultural practice and a vital source of income, with fine pieces taking weeks or months to complete. Stories, culture, and heritage are woven into every piece.
Each piece begins with a coiled cord forming the structural soul of the work, around which finer threads are wound and woven upward in a continuous spiral. The fibers are dyed with natural pigments from local plants, bark, roots, and mud, bringing colour to life, with carefully alternated threads producing the intricate patterns that define Werregue's unmistakable aesthetic.
Every Werregue piece is inherently one of a kind — shaped by organic materials, the maker's individual hand, and an endless variety of forms and motifs. Beyond their beauty, these works sustain Wounaan communities through trade and cultural exchange, standing as a lasting testament to indigenous creativity and dedication.
